Badger was banded as a fledgling on Avalanche Peak, Arthur's Pass during February 2020. He was busy feeding on alpine plants most of the day the team was up there, alongside another new fledgling. Every time a new visitor appeared at the top of this popular climbing track, the little birds would quickly fly up to check out the new people and see if they had any treats. Kea are perfectly capable of foraging and feeding themselves so the most important message for people to remember around kea is NEVER EVER FEED THEM and don't let them find your food or rubbish either. They can become habituated and learn to hang around humans and human sites longer, making them susceptible to all sorts of dangers - traffic, lead poisoning and investigating all new things, like poison baits.
