This noble bird is having a happy life in New Zealand. Byron II was banded as a fledgling at Arthur's Pass Township in January 2020. He is named after his one-year old buddy in the area called Byron. Sadly, the original Byron died in November 2019 due to complications as a result of severe lead poisoning—a very common issue in the village. Byron II has already undergone chelation treatment for lead poisoning in the South Island Wildlife Hospital in Christchurch and released into the wild, healthy once again, in late January 2020. Long may he live in the mountains and not succumb to lead poisoning like so many others in the area.
