Chancellor was banded at Chancellor Hut next to Fox Glacier along with 34 other kea. Chancellor Hut is the oldest alpine hut still in its original placement, built between 1929-31. It was carried in piece by piece and assembled on site, the location of which was chosen by alpine guides Peter and Alec Graham. In 2008 a major renovation restored the hut to its former glory, after the hut had fallen into decline. Located on the Southwest face of Chancellor Ridge, more than 200m above Fox Glacier, it has incredible views of some of the country’s highest peaks and onto the glacier below. The hut also has a long-drop toilet with an unbeatable view straight across the lower part of the glacier and out to the West Coast.
