Daniel was banded as an adult in December 2021 after being found in Arthur's Pass village hopping around with a deformed right foot. He was captured and his foot was assessed in case of an injury that could be fixed. However upon closer examination it seems his foot has been like this since birth and he is coping well living with it like this. He only a band on his good leg so he can be identified more readily (sometimes there is another kea with a deformed leg hanging around in the area). He is inquisitive, healthy and heavy, with a calm nature. He is sponsored and named by David Searle, Harcourts Marlborough. Daniel is named after David's father. A portion of all David's sales go directly to the Kea Conservation Trust and the Kea Sightings Database to assist in kea conservation and understanding more about kea ecology. We are very grateful for sponsors like this which help sustain the work done by our small team which is carried out entirely in a voluntary capacity! David and his daughter Adriana are also huge supporters and have helped out on kea conservation work in a big way!
