Firn was banded on Mount Mitchell near to Fox Glacier on 25th May 2021. Firn (also called Névé) is the intermediate stage between snow and glacial ice when snow has been compacted so that there are no spaces between snowflakes or crystals. Firn is found under the snow that accumulates at the head of a glacier.
