Hakatere was banded as a young fledgling near White Horse Hill at Aoraki/Mt Cook village in February 2020. Hakatere (meaning "to make swift" or "swift dance") is the Māori name for the Ashburton River. The south branch arises at a small glacier in the Hakatere Conservation Park, inland from Ashburton, and the north branch at the base of Mt Hutt. Both areas have had kea populations. Hakatere was named by the Ashburton Branch of Forest and Bird, after a wonderful talk by Dr Laura Young about the work of the Kea Conservation Trust.
