Motu Maha

Motu Maha is one of the Māori names for the Auckland Islands. They are also known as Maungahuka by some iwi. The Auckland Islands lie 465 km south of New Zealand and are the largest of New Zealand's subantarctic islands (combined area of 57,000 ha). They boast a rich array of flora (196 recorded species), a large number of endemic invertebrates (95 species that are found nowhere else on earth) and are important breeding grounds for seabirds such as the yellow-eyed penguin, white capped mollymawks and the endemic Auckland Shag. Motu Maha was banded in January 2023 on the Bald Range.
