Pax was caught as a juvenile in February 2022 at Red Tarns above the Aoraki/Mount Cook Village. He was caught as part of a DOC study testing new GPS transmitter technology to better understand kea movements. Local comedian Pax Assadi was with the catching team filming a series on threatened New Zealand wildlife. It was his first ever encounter with a kea and to ensure this moment wasn't forgotten, the researchers named the bird "Pax". We hope that, like Pax Assadi, this young kea namesake will continue to entertain and make people happy on his travels 😀
