Peaka (pronounced Pee-kah) was caught at the White Horse Hill Campground where she was part of a summer-time “kea gang” of juveniles hanging around on the buildings and campervans. She was named by Lily, the daughter of Jessica Meehan, a zookeeper from Denver Zoo, Colorado, USA who joined the KCT team in February 2020 for banding and lead testing of kea. Lily knows that Colorado’s pika (pronounced pie-ka), an alpine mammal related to rabbits (lagomorph), faces many of the same threats as kea due to climate change in these fragile alpine environments. Lily and Jessica hope that Peaka will continue to inspire hope for the future of kea as she flies around the peaks of the Southern Alps.
