Roadrunner was banded in Arthur's Pass township in March 2026 as a fledgling. Roadrunner was named by a visitor from America who said; "Roadrunners are a unique bird from the Americas that live in a harsh environment (desert versus alpine) and may not be as smart as kea but they are tough, adaptable, and their behavior can be comical. When I visit New Zealand, I find that people are interested in my stories about American wildlife, and along with tales of bears, coyotes, and bobcats, stories of roadrunners are popular. I have a mated pair of roadrunners that build a nest on my property every spring, and I may name them "Kea" and "Kiwi" to remind me of special New Zealand birds."
