Roo was named by West coast Tai Poutini Polytechnic students studying outdoor education who came to help the team with kea catching and banding during July 2020 at the Otira Viaduct lookout. Roo was caught and banded as a fledgling, less than a year old, along with five others that day including Rab. "Roo is Rab the Kea's Guardian Angel. Our encounter with Roo was short but sweet, as Rab sat patiently for bands to be put on him Roo mindfully perched on the top of the DOC truck. As Rab was released it was Roo's turn to get banded and TPP students had the privilege to name him after their outdoor instructor Andrew (Roo) Riley, much like Roo the Kea keeps an eye on Rab, Roo the instructor keeps an eye on his aspiring outdoor students.
