Tombstone was caught at Fox Glacier and was part of a group of kea visiting both the glacier and Chancellor Hut above. He is named after a huge 'tombstone' boulder which had been perched precariously on the ridgeline above Victoria Flat on the Fox Glacier for a while - guides had been watching it closely and awaiting the day it fell down. The day before Tombstone was caught there had been a lot of rockfall activity making some huge rumbles in the night. The kea catch team awoke in the morning to find the tombstone had fallen down and shortly afterwards were joined by kea on the ice. Tombstone was the most curious of the group and was caught, banded and named after the mighty boulder!
