Tutū was one of seven kea banded near Pohara in coastal Golden Bay in July 2020. She is an young female who is found hanging out in a large (11+) circus of kea around the area. This group of birds are often found at peoples houses in the area, which is nearly at sea level. Tutū is named by the Kea Conservation Trust Youth Ambassadors, whole roles are to be ambassadors for kea conservation. The Kea Conservation Ambassador programme encourages students to develop and grow as leaders and have opportunities to be involved in kea conservation. Tutū is the reo Māori word for ‘fiddle’ or ‘fidget’. As the name suggests, kea do like to investigate and ‘fiddle’ with everything and anything that is new to them (the technical term for this is 'neophilic' - a love of novel objects).
