Wairere – stream of water, waterfall, in te reo māori. It was on a rainy Fiordland day when a young male kea gave us the privilege of catching him at Monkey Creek in Fiordland National Park so he could be banded and given a health check. The young kea stayed calm, only wriggling a little bit and was soon back to soaring over the steep surrounding cliffs and mountains that he calls home. It is in these cliffs and mountains when it rains that waterfalls appear like magic and as this special bird came to us on a rainy day in a place of waterfalls he was named Wairere. Please help us by looking out for Waiere on your travels so we know he is keeping an eye on Fiordland’s waterfalls.
