A local man told us that kea are seldom seen around the village these days. We arrived 11 am on Thursday and heard a few in The bush around sunset but didn’t see any. Before sunrise on Friday I heard a lot calling and saw them flying across from the beech forest on one side of the village to the beech forest on the other side. Very difficult to photograph in low light as the sun‘s rays were only on the distant mountain tops. Then I found a small group of kea playing on a cabin roof. After about 10 minutes they flew up to the forest and I didn’t see any more but I could still hear them calling
Behaviour
Calling in beech first. flying & playing on roof of cabin at sunrise for about 10 minutes
