Comments
Unbanded Kea had opened lid on a DOC150 stoat trap and triggered the mechanism, trapping its left leg. I was notified and came to assess, was able to remove Kea from the trap without further damage and transferred to a cardboard box. I contacted both Tamsin at Kea Conservation and Cody from DOC Twizel and informed them of the situation. Bird was transported to Twizel and handed to Cody and Liz to care for overnight. Wound was cleaned, and fluids and painkillers administered without the need for a crop tube. Foot appears to be broken, missing the end of one toe, and skin ripped. Being organised to transfer bird to either Christchurch or Dunedin Wildlife Hospitals.
Behaviour
Banded bird was sitting on roof watching as other Kea was being handled
