Melsby is named after Mel, a lovely DOC ranger from Mt Cook who is a keen kea conservationist and loves to get out and explore the hills and mountains. This kea was banded with a large group of young fledglings hanging out at Moturau hut on the Kepler Track, Fiordland, during the winter of 2019. Did you know kea are very social birds and often display a complex range of behaviours which are not easy for humans to interpret. This photo shows two very young birds, possibly siblings, preening each other.
