This kea, banded as a fledgling during August 2019, is named after Sir Murray Halberg, an extraordinary athlete and human being. Sir Murray won the 5000m event at the 1960 Rome Olympics, as well as the 3 mile at the then Empire Games in both 1958 and 1962. He was the first New Zealander to run under 4 minutes for a mile, and a world record holder at both 2 mile and 3 mile. He would later be known for his humanitarian work, particularly with children with disabilities. He established what was originally the Crippled Children’s Foundation, now known as the Halberg Trust, and the NZ Sportsman of the Year Awards, now known as the Halberg Awards. Murray the kea will be known for his tenacity, and never giving up, but with a cheeky sense of humour.
