This kea was banded as a fledgling (less than a year old) at the Otira Viaduct lookout near Arthur's Pass during July 2020. September 2021 update - Snoop was found by DoC on 27th September to be drinking and vomiting, listless and unable to fly. He was captured by DoC and has been sent to the South Island Wildlife Hospital in Christchurch for treatment. These are the classic signs of lead poisoning in kea. October 2021 Update - Snoop lead levels were 2.44 mg/litre and he had 2 lumps of metal in his gut. That is a huge lead reading!! The Arthur's Pass community is working on removing lead from key buildings in Arthur's Pass village where kea eat the lead (which tastes sweet to them) and accumulates in their body. Hopefully in a few more years, no more kea will need to be treated for lead poisoning. If you wish to donate to this lead removal project, please contact the Arthur's Pass Wildlife Trust or the Kea Conservation Trust to make a donation.
