'Taiao' is a special word in te reo Māori; it refers to nature or the environment. Kea are an integral part of New Zealand's environment, and the mountains and forests of Te Wai Pounamu - the South Island. The unmistakable call of the kea defines wild nature. This name was chosen by Alison Ballance who was with us in Arthur's Pass during March 2019 to record an episode of Our Changing World on the Kea Sightings Database for Radio New Zealand.
