Hohoro was caught and banded in October 2016 as a juvenile. He can often be seen in Arthur's Pass township opposite the store. Hohoro is a Maori word that translates to "be quick, speedy, fast, swift". Hohoro was admitted to the South Island Wildlife Hospital twice in his life - once for lead poisoning (which was treated and he recovered) and then again in winter 2026 for an injury. His bill was injured and he spent 48 days in hospital receiving special care and treatment from the lovely staff and volunteers there. Dr Pauline fixed up his bill and he was released on 18th Sept 2026. Help keep an eye on Hohoro by reporting any time you see him and please send photos so we can see how he's healing. While Hohoro was in hospital, his bands were changed from White O on Orange to the Yellow HO on Black (the old ones were really worn out).
