Shae was banded in mid July 2019, at Luxmore Hut on the Kepler Track, Fiordland. Shae the kea can sometimes be rather cheeky and bold. Recently he flew off with the GoPro belonging to some trampers and recorded himself and his mates flying along!! Check out the footage here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvHZy9i9LMA Shae was named after a little helper at the hut - the young daughter of a lovely DOC ranger in Fiordland; they were staying at the hut and helping out the hut warden and with kea work at the time. Involving kids and families in conservation and activities such as logging sightings in to the Kea Database is an excellent way to hook them into a love and care of nature for life! Kea are naturally curious and explorative because that's what it takes for them to survive in their harsh, mountainous environment. You can help them by not encouraging them to beg or steal or interact with your stuff - especially not your food!
